When I was in college, I learned to work with what works, no matter how bizarre it seemed. Call it academic version of my lucky sock or whatever you want, but I found that I was most successful in my classes when I took notes on a yellow, college-ruled, notepad with a fine pointed blue pen. A black pen would not do, nor would white paper. I had different pads for different classes. There were rules to this thing and they could not be broken. If I took notes via a different system, I would rewrite them with on my yellow pad with the proper pen. It was as if my brain was best trained to process information when I entered it a certain way. This, incidentally is not a post about note-taking, but I do have some links below in case you need help in this area! This is a post about doing what works, and being willing to drop habits that are not bringing you any closer to your goals.
If your current study mode is not helping you to retain information, change it. How? There are many tools on the internet, just type in “study skills” and watch the flood of advice come in. If you would prefer a human touch, contact Barbara Brown and Amanda Parker in Advising Plus (for UAlbany Students Only). Whatever you do, do not remain stuck – trapped in behavior that does not yield positive results. I remember singing course information before an exam. I earned an A. I sang and paced the floor all night, high on Pepsi. I no longer drink soda, but I was willing to look a little weird in order to do well. Examine yourself and make a list of what has helped or hindered you academically and make the necessary changes.
